Whether your summer adventures keep you close to home or sunning on a beach, a book is an easy way to keep boredom at bay! Summer reading is a great way to increase one’s knowledge of the world, discover new genres, learn a new language, or even brush up on a second one.

Summer Reading Themes & Bilingual Book Recommendations

Your local library is always a wonderful place to start for summer reading ideas, and we have collected our bilingual book recommendations to go with this year’s summer reading themes.

If your library is participating in the iREAD 2024: Read, Renew, Repeat reading theme about conservation, we carry several non-fiction books and multicultural tales that fit that theme.

The Three Little Howlers is a lively retelling of The Three Little Pigs set in the rainforest of South America. The book incorporates native flora, fun facts about howler monkeys and jaguars, and engaging activities. Also based on The Three Little Pigs, The Three Little Sun Bears takes place in a tropical rainforest in Asia. Amazing Sports from Around the World is a great place to start a summer reading adventure if your library participates in the Collaborative Summer Library Program theme! It’s also a fun way to get excited for the 2024 Summer Games.

Amazing Sports from Around the World explores unusual and fascinating sports from diverse cultures and locations all around the globe. Kids don’t ever need to leave their favorite reading nook to travel the world to learn all about these sports; some they may have heard of, and some may be brand new! Children will be transported to South Africa to learn about Ostrich Racing, Thailand for Elephant Polo, and Norway for Skijoring, to name just a few. 

Tuning into the Summer Olympics is another way for kids to discover even more fun and unique sports, with athletes participating worldwide! They might be interested to find out that Jai Alai, featured in Amazing Sports from Around the World, was played in the 1900 Olympics with only France and Spain competing!
