Learn more about Pledge 1%, Room to Read, and two other non-profits that need your support to continue their work to promote multicultural children’s literature.

What is #GivingTuesday?

#GivingTuesday is a global movement – a day dedicated to giving back. “Individuals, businesses, and organizations around the world come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.”

The mission of Pledge 1% is to make giving back a priority, and to enable companies of all sizes to have a positive social impact. The Pledge 1% commitment is a public promise to provide a specific pledge type or donation combination of profit, product, equity, and/or employee time to a designated charity of choice.

As a Pledge 1% member, Language Lizard continues to support Room to Read’s global literacy efforts during the COVID-19 crisis. This is a logical fit, since Language Lizard’s mission is to support culturally responsive teaching by providing creative and engaging educational products in over 50 languages to schools, libraries, and bilingual families.

Supporting Room to Read

Room to Read is a global, non-profit organization with a local New Jersey chapter. Their focus is on literacy and gender equality in education in 16 countries in Asia and Africa.

Room to Read’s innovative model focuses on deep, systemic transformation within schools in low-income communities during two time periods that are most critical in a child’s schooling: early primary school for literacy acquisition, and secondary school for girls’ education.

Room to Read has benefited 16.8 million children across more than 37,000 communities in 16 countries. Learn more by visiting their website.

Free e-books are available to all students on Room to Read’s digital platform. Students can view and read books from around the world produced by Room to Read authors and illustrators through the digital platform Literacy Cloud, with more than 180 children’s books and learning resources.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day

This #GivingTuesday, Multicultural Children’s Book Day (MCBD) asks you to support their FREE Diverse Books for Classrooms Project.

Donations go toward building classroom libraries with diverse, inclusive, and multicultural books! Authors and publishers have generously donated hundreds of diverse books.

Educators can also request a FREE diverse YA or picture book for their own classrooms.

We Need Diverse Books

Another wonderful organization to support this #GivingTuesday is We Need Diverse Books (WNDB), a grassroots organization that advocates for literature that “reflects and honors the lives of all young people.”

Donations go to their many initiatives, like WNDB in the Classroom, their Walter Dean Myers Award & Grand Program, and educational kits.
