What is Random Acts of Kindness Day?
On February 17th, people in the United States are given a day to encourage random acts of kindness. It all started in 1995 when a small nonprofit from Colorado, suitably named the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, organized this celebration. Later in 2004, New Zealand took up the idea to welcome springtime on September 1st.
The ways in which you can celebrate this day are infinite. The idea is to spread kindness around and try to incorporate it into our everyday lives. In the classroom, teachers can ask students how they plan to spread positivity throughout the month. Then, the students can report back to class and share their experiences. Check out the list below for more ideas!
1. Write a letter
Whether it’s for a friend, family member, or the elderly living in nursing homes, you can brighten anyone’s day with a handwritten letter. For immigrant students, teachers can encourage them to organize letters for loved ones overseas. This activity also provides the opportunity to discuss ideas of homesickness and community building.
2. Leave a positive note somewhere random
Think about all the places you go during the week and write a positive note for someone to find. You can do this at home or even when you go grocery shopping! If you live in a multicultural area, consider teaching your students simple phrases they can write in their messages.
3. Make someone laugh
If you are not much of a comedian, you can still send a funny video.
4. Read a book to someone
Maybe someone in your family has a hard time reading or just wants to spend extra time with you. You can call them up or sit with them and read a fun book. Take this opportunity to ask your students about their favorite books and why they consider them to be special.
5. Do something kind for your neighbor
If the snowstorm hit your neighborhood hard, you can help shovel your neighbor’s walk. This activity gives you the chance to brainstorm and collaborate with your class. You can encourage your students to reach out to classmates who are new this year or who may be struggling.
Whatever it is you decide to do, no act of kindness is too small. The idea is to surprise someone with positivity, whether they are a stranger or someone close to you.
